Senior Customer Success Consultant

As a Senior Consultant in the public sector, I have spent the last 3 years working to solve our customers' business problems while continuing to expand my skills within the Appian platform and beyond. Designing the future of business isn’t just writing code, it’s about having a blend of technical depth and strategic foresight that have allowed me to grow as a developer and as a consultant. I’m no longer just troubleshooting; I’m building systems that drive large scale innovation.

The daily rhythm: customer success in the public sector

My day as a consultant is similar to a developer on any Agile-oriented project. I joined an existing project upon hire and now primarily work on building out new features for public sector agencies to help them modernize and become digital first. I attend daily standups to review progress and resolve team blockers, and support testing and training by answering questions about new sprint features. Outside of sprints, I drive project advancement through peer reviews or Jira backlog refinement to ensure each sprint moves our customers closer to their long-term strategic goals.

High-impact projects

Appian has allowed me to stretch my abilities by solving complex operational problems with creative solutions. I recently contributed to a project to automate a client’s document-generation process, which had previously been a major manual bottleneck.

I collaborated with data engineers to integrate external information directly into the Appian platform, where I built a logic engine to automatically organize and format the data. I then designed a process that converted this information into a PDF document for end users. While the project involved a steep learning curve, it was rewarding to replace a manual hurdle with a seamless, scalable solution that delivers value to the customer.

Addressing customer’s needs often requires solutions beyond what Appian provides out of the box. I’ve had many fun challenges that resulted in me poring through documentation and our internal app store to find a possible way forward. Adding tools to my toolbelt with new or niche features that others have built within Appian’s ecosystem is a rewarding and memorable experience that I can then apply to new challenges going forward.

Evolving alongside the Appian platform

The evolution and expansion of the Appian platform consistently challenges me to grow as a consultant and developer, causing me to embrace a mindset of lifelong learning. As the Appian platform grows, so does the potential for total business transformation. The engineering team regularly delivers new learning modules and innovative approaches to problem solving, and with these new releases, better ways to build solutions become available causing me to reevaluate my established methods and thinking strategies.

Appian broadened my understanding of "full-stack" development beyond MySQL, Python, Java, and C++. It showed me how to smoothly integrate these elements into a complete product using a clear process. Now, using SAIL, I apply best practices to real-world problems, understanding solution rationale and conceptualizing scalable applications from micro to macroscopic design levels.

Growing toward a higher impact

During my time with the Appian platform, I’ve moved from being a traditional coder to a strategic architect of change. As the platform grows, so does the potential for total business transformation. By combining technical rigor with a consulting vision, we are designing systems that will define the future of the public sector.
