Am·bi·vert — a person whose personality has a balance of extrovert and introvert features. I am an ambivert, in other words, I’m both social and shy (it is kinda weird, I know). Perhaps that is why volunteering as an Appian Ambassador is so satisfying. The shy-me empathizes with the nervousness of being at a new job where you don’t know anyone. The extrovert-me relishes welcoming excited new colleagues on their first day.
Being an Appian Ambassador is a pretty sweet volunteer gig. We exchange emails before their arrival, greet them and eat breakfast with them on their first day, go to a happy hour at the end of onboarding, and keep in touch for the next few months to help them get acclimated to Appian. I take an ask-me-anything approach; nothing is off limits and I’m candid.
I’ve been an Ambassador for 18 months, welcoming colleagues from every region in the US, to Singapore, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, France, England, and more.
My job as Director of Proposal Management keeps me in HQ, however I am deeply engaged with individuals/teams from around the world, touching almost every department in Appian. In my personal life I long to travel again. I’ve walked on the Appian Way, but with two young children at home, world travel is on hold for a few more years. I can get my travel-fix in and must confess….
Confession: I picked two new hires who were starting on the same start date because between them, they spoke 9 different languages. I thought it would make for interesting conversation. My “other” language is Latin; I can conjugate a mean verb and discuss etymology
Confession: If your favorite band is the Foo Fighters I will wear a concert tee on your first day
Confession: I picked a new hire so I could razz him about the spirited employee who referred him to Appian
Confession: I wore a very bright yellow/green soccer jersey as a surprise for a British new hire because I found out that we both cheer for the Norwich, England ‘Canaries’
Confession: Two new hires have brought me chocolates on their first day (Thank you Enrico Pagani and Sofia Menchaca!)
Confession: One new hire started during our annual Sales Kick Off event, and we spent the evening bar hopping.
I’m your friendly, neighborhood ambivert Appian Ambassador. And I confess, I can’t wait until the next new hire starts to do it all over again.
