Star Wars: The Force Awakens at its very core is a movie about recruiting to the dark side. Kylo Ren, a dark side warrior, tries and fails to convince Rey to join the dark side. Now, imagine if Kylo Ren understood how to craft a distinct and compelling argument to Rey. In this article, we’ll examine the fundamental recruiting mistake in the film’s climax.
Here’s the argument Kylo Ren makes to Rey [while fighting with her on the edge of a massive cliff]: “You need a teacher! I can show you the ways of the Force!”
This scene represents a pivotal moment in which she could either join the light side or enter the dark side. While this pitch offers her mentorship and an understanding of the Force, it fails to provide Rey with her deepest desire: a sense of belonging; family.
This moment may feel familiar to anyone who has recently made a career transition. Think about the last time you accepted a job offer; wasn’t it exciting? Wasn’t it scary? Sometimes such change can be a no-brainer, but it’s always a leap of faith. Switching jobs is guaranteed to be a whirlwind of distractions; making sense of benefits, understanding compensation details, reconciling conflicting advice from your trusted inner circle — the list goes on. At the end of the day your workplace should feel like family in the sense that your core values align with the company’s. An interview should go both ways! While we assess you, you should be assessing us too; it’s a shared responsibility. Appian is a company with a culture built to stand the test of time. And hiring, we are!
