I started working at Appian in September of 2014. I knew my wife was pregnant with our first child, but I hadn’t really told anyone. Like most companies, Appian has HR Orientation on the first day and I used that time to ask questions about how our benefits would affect my family. When I started at Appian, you were required to be employed one year before you would receive Paternity leave; today, employees are eligible from day one!
Following my on-boarding, I worked closely with my manager to understand the options surrounding my impending leave. During the time of my hire, Appian’s Paternity Leave Policy required new employees to be at Appian for one year before they were eligible to receive Paternity Leave. But since I had been only employed for a few weeks, my manager told me not to worry; he was happy to be flexible with my schedule. From that moment, I knew Appian was different when it came to caring about their employees, and when it came to understanding the ups and downs of life. As of 2013, Appian changed their policy. The two weeks of Paternity leave is in addition to the PTO Appian offers throughout the year. Thanks to my PTO benefits, and the flexibility of my manager, I was able to take a month off for my first child. At some companies, this may be frowned upon as a “let down” to your team, but at Appian, everyone is supportive. Appian makes every effort to be all-inclusive and accommodating to all employees, including our new hires that have joined the Appian family.
Another form of “support” Appian offers is via a Parents’ Group on our own “intranet,” if you will. Appian has an internal system (that runs on Appian), called “Home.” Home can be an awesome resource for parents. The Appian Parents’ Group allows us to ask each other questions, such as: “Does anyone know of a good summer camp for 12 year olds?” or “My daughter is learning to program, is there any cool toys you recommend?” Other great things include, people offering old clothes or books that their kids no longer use. The Appian Parents’ Group has really helped me over the years; once, someone posted about TotSwap, a site which has allowed my wife and I to save a ton of money on baby clothes. Furthermore, whenever someone at Appian has a baby, there is a post on Home (usually with cute baby photos!). The post allows everyone in the company to give their congratulations and share in the new parents’ joy.
OK, so now you have a new kid. What other benefits does working at Appian offer? From a location standpoint, Appian is located near a daycare that is walking distance from our office. In fact, I can be with my son in less than 10 minutes! Sometimes for fun, I’ll pick up lunch in Reston Town Center (where Appian is located) and walk to daycare to have lunch with him. If daycare calls because my son fell, or he is just upset, I can be with him in no time (my wife is happy about this). Even if daycare wasn’t close to the Appian office, leaving work to check on my son is still an option. Appian also offers a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account which helps defray the costs of daycare.
Here at Appian, we value the whole-person, and all aspects of their lives. So regardless of whether you have to drop your kid off before work, or pick them up early to go to piano lessons, Appian has you covered.. Appian is even mindful of the “little things”; for example, once a year, Appian offers free flu shots! So if you’re a new parent at Appian (or are not working with us yet), rest assured: you’ll find a great home here.
