Brief Description

Appian is looking for a talented, people oriented HR professional to help us build a world class HR Business Partner function.  The HR business partner (HRBP) position is responsible for aligning business objectives with employees and management in designated business units or departments. Serves as a consultant to management on human resource-related issues. The successful HRBP assesses and anticipates HR-related needs and acts as an employee champion and change agent. The HRBP seeks to develop and execute integrated solutions by communicating proactively with our HR department and business leaders.


  • Act as a strategic HR partner for the business.
  • Manage the day to day operations of the HR function within your business unit(s).
  • Analyze trends and metrics in partnership with the HR team to develop and implement solutions, programs and policies.
  • Resolve conflicts and mediate employee issues.  Conduct effective, thorough and objective investigations
  • Provide day-to-day performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions).
  • Enable and effectively manage ongoing change.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance. Partner with the legal department as needed/required.
  • Work closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention.
  • Collaborate with Appian’s Talent Management team to provide guidance and input to business leaders on departmental restructures, workforce planning, succession planning, and training needs. Dotted line reporting to VP, Talent Management on strategic Talent initiatives.
  • This position currently has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but may serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Required Skills and Experience

  • You have a minimum of 5 years’ experience with demonstrated ability to resolve complex people issues.
  • You have familiarity and experience with multiple HR disciplines, such as compensation practices, benefits administration, immigration, organizational design, employee relations, diversity and inclusion practices, and performance management.
  • You are detailed-oriented, highly organized, and adept at setting up meetings, tracking goals, and managing process.
  • You are data driven.
  • You exercise sound judgment and have the ability to maintain the highly confidential nature of HR work.
  • You are able to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the company.
  • You work well under pressure, take initiative, and you are flexible and cooperative.
  • You are able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • You effectively manage changing priorities, multiple deadlines and competing demands.
  • You thrive, and have a preference for, dynamic, fast paced and high growth environments.
  • When business needs require it, you are willing to travel either domestically or internationally.



  • B.A./B.S. degree
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP Certification (preferred, not required).
