Senior Software Engineer (Database & Search)

Description

As a Senior Software Engineer working on our data backend, you will have the opportunity to build scalable low-code APIs to communicate with external data sources including relational and NoSQL databases as well as Elasticsearch. You will maintain and enhance support for many major relational databases in addition to adding support for new relational and NoSQL databases. Your goal is to enable customers to get the most out of their data - allowing them to easily update, fetch and visualize their data.

Appian is a low-code application platform for building powerful, enterprise-grade web and mobile apps with flexible, visual models instead of complex custom code. Appian Records provide a business-level data abstraction and a common query framework for unifying data sourced from disparate external systems. With your data in a central location, you can easily adjust your data model, define how users view your data, and integrate enterprise processes so users can take informed action when viewing the data.

To be successful in this role, you need:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Working knowledge of different persistence systems (relational and/or NoSQL databases, Elasticsearch), distributed systems, and cloud infrastructure
  • Experienced in designing and implementing performant, highly available and mission critical distributed systems
  • Advance knowledge of data structures and algorithms
  • Leverage relevant software development experience to radiate best practices and faster development.
  • Manage availability, latency, scalability and efficiency of the product by engineering reliability into software and systems.
  • Mentor junior software engineers by sharing best-practices and providing guidance on how to become more proficient.
  • Share advanced/expert knowledge with others in the department, both on and off team; maintain a reputation as a key resource in those areas.
  • Lead technological changes to keep the platform modern.
  • Effectively communicate technical designs verbally, visually and/or in writing for small to medium sized technical audiences.
  • Ideally 5+ years of experience in Java

Appian is headquartered in the McLean, Virginia area, and we are supportive of both Remote and Hybrid work environments.

Some of the tools and resources we will equip you with include:

  • An on-boarding program that will provide hands-on experience with our platform, and the processes and technologies we use in the Engineering department.
  • Our team works primarily with K, Java, Git; while also having the autonomy to use other technologies as needed to accomplish our goals more effectively.
  • Personal Indie Time (dedicated time to build whatever you want with whomever you want) and annual hackathons that provide opportunities for growth and leadership, which are activities that inspire others and get creative juices flowing.
